“The major work of the world is not done by geniuses. It is done by ordinary people, with balance in their lives, who have learned to work in an extraordinary manner.” ― Gordon B. Hinckley

My Own Worst Nemesis

I am not really sure what I want to write about today. I will be going running at the gym ( yes that means treadmill) when I get off of work tonight. But I have accepted the fact that winter has finally come to Southern Utah and I better get use to doing some treadmill running.

I have my first race of the year/first race since my half  marathon coming up on Saturday. It is only a 5k, but I am still a little nervous for it. I guess nervous really isn’t the right emotion. Maybe a combination of nervous/embarrassment. I know that it is stupid for me to feel like that, but I hate knowing where I was at in my running two years ago and a 5k was a distance I warmed up with not a goal. That being said I am excited to be back into running and I hope to finish in 30 minutes or less.

One issue that I have been experiencing lately is with my running nemesis. Not the one I wrote about earlier this year. This nemesis is pure evil. He breads doubt and weakness into my every run.  It is easy to compete against other people. I can handle that. It is hard competing against someone who knows my weaknesses and uses them against me. My true nemeses is myself. I compete against myself almost every single day. I know how fast I was able to run races in the past. I am always thinking about how easy running four mile use to be or how my 5k time was closer to the 20 minute mark instead of the 30 minute mark. Sometimes it is hard, but I just have to forget my past accomplishments and focus of where I am right now. I feel 100% better physically than I did a month ago and for that I am grateful. I look forward to getting stronger and faster until I can beat crush my old times and my nemesis in the process.  I don’t know if I will ever stop competing with my past times, but I think that until I get some races under my belt and create some new times I will continue to compete with my own too personal nemesis. (Zombie Beau=the past Beau I compete with)

I want to do a quick shout out to The Marathon Training Academy http://marathontrainingacademy.com/. I am using their training plan to train for my marathon and it rocks. I also listen to their podcast every week, and download a past podcast to listen to during my long runs on Saturdays. If any of you are interested in training for marathons or half marathons I highly recommend giving these guys a listen they are great and I have learned some really good tips that have helped me with my training this time around.

Treadmill Hell

What a crazy day today in Southern Utah. This morning I woke up to crazy wind, then rain, followed by a pretty intense snow storm. Needless to say that I took my long run inside and hit the treadmill. Can I just say that I hate running on the treadmill. I just get sooo bored when I am on the treadmill. Lets hope that I do not have to do that too often or else I just might go crazy. If you are stuck running on a treadmill here are some things that I do to help make my treadmill running more bareable. Sometimes I distract myself with a movie or TV show. Today I watched American Pickers and The Next Great Baker. Another fun time passer is people watching. There are so many different types of people at the gym. The thing that helps me the most is to set smaller time goals and adjust speed or incline at the end of each goal. I don’t have much else to offer too make treadmill run more bareable. What do you guys do to help break up treadmill runs?

After changing my blogging method and schedule so much I have decided that I am going to go back to posting the way I did when I first started. I will once again be blogging three times a week. I will blog on the days that I run. Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. I have been looking at my stats and noticed that they have severely gone down since I have moved away from consistent blogging. One of the main reasons I started this blog was so I could help others who are also training for a marathon and trying to live a healthier lifestyle. I am back on track and excited to share my experiences.

OK now that I am back I NEED YOUR HELP! I cannot wake up in the mornings. When my alarm goes off I wake up and am not really tired, but it is so cold outside that I do not want to get out of my warm bed. Running in the evenings is not really an option for me because by the time I get off of work it is dark outside. What are some things you guys do for motivation in the mornings?

New Year New Goals!

First of all I want to apologize to all my readers for slacking on post over the last couple of weeks. I have been in the process of moving and have just gotten settled. My new apartment is great. The one downfall is we don’t have the Internet. I am going to have to find an easy way to continue posting. I never thought that I would miss writing my blog but I do. I like being able to sit down and write. Especially when I know that it is helping other people achieve goals that they have. So until I decided to rejoin the 2000s and have the Internet in my house, I will just be posting whenever possible.

Moving on the the reason all of you are reading this. Lets talk about running. I have set five running goals for 2012.

1) Kanaraville 5k

2) Kanab 10k.

3) Red Rock Relay in Moab.

4) Bryce Canyon Half Marathon.

5) St. George Marathon.

I am not limiting myself to only running in these races. I will try to do others in-between. I decided that I would start over on the marathon training I have done so far since sickness and the holidays disrupted the schedule anyway.

Had a great run today. I was suppose to do four miles but I ended up doing closer to five. It felt great to get out and run. It has been too long and I can  tell that it has been a while.

Today’s run was pretty killer. It was my “hill” day. Which means I needed to run on hills as much as possible. My normal running route by default is pretty hilly so I am use to minor increases and decreases in elevation. Last night I was driving home from work and noticed a light near the top a mountain near my house. I thought “I want to run there”. The light ended up being part of a golf course sub-division. I mapped out the route and went to bed excited for the challenge. Despite being chased by a dog and running through two herds of deer it was a really good run. I think I will continue to use it. I will just avoid the road with the dog. haha.

My run today was great. It has been a while since I have done all of my runs during the week so it felt great to start off the new year strong. It was a good run and it felt great to be running outside. The temperature was perfect and the sunshine felt great. Although not fifteen minutes after i finished my run it turned freezing and snowed. Guess I lucked out. So there is a new running gadget that I want to buy. I’m not sure if it is a necessity but it seems awesome. It is a Garmin running watch. My brother got one for Christmas and I have been researching it and I WANT ONE. It tracks miles, pace, and maps your course. The part I am most interested in is that it will track how far I have run. I hate having to drive the streets watching the odometer, trying to find the route that will get my mileage. I keep thinking of all the freedom I would have with a watch that will tell me how far I have gone. The problem is that it is pricey. More than $200 pricey. Too bad Santa will not be coming around for a while.

I don’t know why I didn’t write about this sooner but I have officially registered for two of my five running goals. I registered for the Kanaraville “Freeze Your Buns Run” at the end of January. I am also signed up and on a team for the Red Rock Relay in Moab in May. I am really excited to have these races to look forward too. It will help me to stay focused and really motivate me to train harder. Especially now that I am part of a team. The last thing I want is to be the weak link. On that note I missed my run today. Yesterday I drove four hours to surprise a friend for their birthday and did not get home until late. I planned on running when I got off work, but I had to work late. What can you do. Shiz  happens and you have to deal with it. I hope that all you runners took advantage of the perfect running weather last week, because I think we will be in for come cold runs for a while.

Week Two- Life Happens… and It’s OK

Monday Dec 12: Easy Run- Today felt like I had never run a step in my entire life. I felt so sluggish and unmotivated. NOT A GOOD RUN! I ran 4 miles today. What did you do?

Wednesday Dec 14: NO RUN

Saturday Dec 17: NO RUN

I am disappointed to say that I only ran one day this week. This week was a busy week full of… “life”. I had birthday dinner with friends, work Christmas Parties, and was sick. Sometimes life happens and when it does you just have to do your best and not beat yourself up when you fall short. IT”S OK!! All you can do is try harder. This week I came to the  realization that running or whatever the hobby may be cannot get in the way of “life”. Hobbies cannot take the place of the people, jobs, or religion. A balance must be maintained. This is what I learned this week. What about you?

Week 1-Adaptability

Hey guys, sorry its been so long since my last post. Posting three times a week was getting to be a little too much for me. So the new schedule is that I will be posting on Sunday nights. The posts will be a 20 week look into my marathon training. The posts will include running journal entries and hopefully a running related topic that I will have been able to put some thought and time into. Once again sorry about the wait but I think that this will make the blog a more enjoyable experience for everyone all around.

Monday: Easy Run- Today is December  and so far it has snowed all five days in December. What the H! Today I ran at an indoor track. It was nice to be out of the snow and cold and super annoying to have to count my laps. It made it hard to think of anything else as I ran besides 27, 28,29,27….o crap did I do lap 27 already? But 40 laps later I finished my 4 miles and it felt just as good as four miles outside. So I guess that will be my running home for the next…… four months. I felt a little more tired than I would have liked during my run today. I think this was because I did not have much to eat today pre-run so I was a little low on fuel. Hopefully things warm up here so I can get a few day of outside running. I ran 4 miles today. What did you do?

Wednesday: Hill run nope Tempo Run- Today was supposed to be my first day of doing hill runs. I was excited because for some sick reason I like running uphill. Unfortunately things are still a little frozen here and I did not want to take a chance slipping on the ice. Things have been melting pretty good over the last few days so I am hoping that I will be able to run outside some next week. My run today was not the best. I ate Chinese food for lunch, which stayed with me all day making it really hard to run. I need to put a better effort into my eating habits. I do pretty well most of the time. But there are some areas that I really need to work on. My goal for my long run this week is to make a serious effort to properly fuel before the run so I don’t have any excuses to have a bad run. Today at work a friend showed me this video. Check it out.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PzoxTgfRO0 I wish I could give such a compelling speech. I ran 5 miles today. What did you do?

Friday: Long Run- Today was my long run. It went a lot better than my other runs this week. I was looking forward to doing my long run outside on Saturday but I am going to go to Salt Lake tomorrow to look at the Christmas lights at Temple Square so I had to do the long run today. It has been a great first week of training. I ran 6 miles today. What did you do?

It has been a great week of running. I learned that I have literally become a fair weather runner. If conditions are not just perfect it’s hard for me to get out and run. Kinda a humbling week for a guy who at one time considered himself a running fanatic. This week I learned that it is important to be adaptable. It has been freezing and icy over the last week. Normally I would have opted out of running until favorable conditions came around. Instead I went to the indoor track and did my running. I am done waiting for favorable conditions. If you always wait for perfect conditions then you will be waiting forever. Adapt and continue the journey.

Now I need some feed back from everyone. This is my first week combining what would normally be three posts in to one big post. Is it too long? Doing it like this works better for me but I don’t want people to get bored and not read everything. So please just leave me a comment and let me know what you think. I ran 15 miles this week. What did you do?

I think that the title for my post today perfect identifies how I am/have been feeling about myself at the moment. Let me explain.I have had a crazy past couple of weeks with my California trip, knee problems, and Thanksgiving. I am feeling refreshed because it feels great to be running again. I am feeling blah because I am paying for weeks of unhealthy eating, not running and plain laziness. So that is how a person can feel refreshed and blah at the same time. haha

I started my new training plan today. It involves three running days per week. Which is perfect for me because I was having a hard time finding the time to run six days a week when I first started. Each day is split into different running styles. Mondays will be my Easy run days. This does not mean that it is a run that is short and I can slack off on. It means that I should be running at a conversational pace. Meaning that if I were to be running with someone I should be able to easily talk to them during the run. Wednesdays is either a Hill or Tempo run. During a Tempo run I run 1 mile at an easy pace followed by a 1/4 mile at a fast pace that can be maintained, and then a 1/4 mile at an easy pace. This pattern will be repeated until I have 1/2 mile left which will be finished at an easy pace. The Hills run is as obvious as it sounds. I just need to find a route with hills and run it at a steady pace. Saturdays will be long run. This should be done  at a pace that is 1 minute slower than my best mile time. Which I will have to time  on Wednesday because I forgot to when I went running tonight. I think that this will be a really great schedule and I am excited to be trying it out for the next 20 weeks.

I just need to do another plug for the Turkey Burrito recipe that I posted a few weeks ago. I am making it again tonight and it is sooo dang easy to make. I have had it simmering while I have been writing this post. It is so fast, easy, and delish. TRY IT!! My favorite running time of the year is just around the corner. CHRISTMAS LIGHT RUNNING!!! Seriously even if you are not a runner I recommend doing this. It is a totally awesome way to take advantage of the lights and a great activity to add to your December. Just watch out for cars(parked and moving), trash cans, and basically anything else which may or may not belong in the road. I say this because you will be  mesmerized by the Christmas lights and will not be as attentive as your should be.  I start the first of December and do it once a week and just find a different neighborhood to run in each week.

I am looking forward to a great 20 weeks with lots of progress and great results. Thanks for reading my blog and please send the link out to anyone who might be interested. Now take advantage of our snowless streets ( if you live in Utah) and go running.

Black Friday

So I have been looking back at my last posts and I feel like I am losing site of what I intended my blog to be about. Once this weekend is over I promise I am going to get back to writing about running. I plan to officially start my training on Monday. I have been researching some different fueling supplements and running shoes so look forward to some posts about that.

I had to post this video because it is currently my favorite commercial.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFBsxwKHT14. I have to say that I really excited to be part of Black Friday on ….Friday. I have never been before so it should be fun. I have my eye on some sweet deals at BestBuy. Probably getting an iphone….we will see. Happy Thanksgiving to all my readers. Look for my next post on Monday.

New Beginnings and Turkey Burritos

There are two things that sure can ruin a good routine. The first is a knee problems, and the second is vacation. I am happy to report that both my knee problem and vacation are over so I will be getting back into the swing of things tomorrow. I have taken about two weeks off from running. I have been going to the gym and riding the stationary bike or doing the elliptical so I have been getting some cardio in. I have been paying special attention to my knee over the last two weeks and I have come to the conclusion that I may have been over doing it with the training program that I was following. I feel like it was probably a little too intense for what I am currently able to handle. But after doing some research I found a program that seems really good. For the past month or so I have been listening to a podcast called marathon training academy. The podcast talks about all training aspects of training for a marathon. The plan that I am going to use is on the website of the Marathon Training Academy. If you listen to podcasts I would recommend  looking into their podcast. Their website is also awesome so check it out.

Since I have not been running for the past couple weeks I don’t really have much running news to write about. So guess what you get another recipe today. I love to cook and especially cooking healthy. I found a recipe for turkey burritos that is the bomb.com.

Gary’s Turkey Burritos

  • 1 pound ground turkey
  • 2 (7 ounce) cans hot tomato sauce
  • 1 (15.25 ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained
  • 1/2 small onion, diced
  • 1 (16 ounce) can fat-free refried beans
  • 1 (16 ounce) container fat free sour cream
  • 3/4 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese
  • 6 (10 inch) flour tortillas

  1. In a large skillet over medium high heat, brown ground turkey. Stir in tomato sauce, corn and onion. Reduce heat to medium and let simmer, stirring occasionally, until liquids reduce (about 20 minutes).
  2. In a separate medium skillet, heat beans over medium-low heat. Prepare sour cream and cheese for sprinkling into burritos. One by one, heat tortillas over stove burner for 1 to 2 minutes, flipping a few times. Top with beans, then meat mixture, then sour cream and cheese. Fold over and serve while still warm.

Thanks for reading everyone. I promise my posts will get more running oriented once i get back into it.

Long Time no Blog

Long time no blog. I am sorry that it has taken me so long to write another post. Trust me I have been wanting to all week I have just not had the time. But I finally have gotten done everything that I needed to since I we got back from Disneyland on Sunday. Disneyland was great. I really do love going to Disneyland. I really think that I could go there every single day and never get tired of it.

Moving on to other news… Today my blog will officially be one month old. Awesome right! Right now I have gotten around 380 views. I think it would be awesome if by midnight tonight it had 500 views. This is a little ambitious considering that my biggest day received 51 views. So this is where you all come in. I need you to post my blog  (cbeaurun.wordpress.com) on your facebook pages, twitter, email, send a link to people who you know are interested in running, or whatever you can use to get people to visit my page.

Enough of that lets talk about running! Ever since daylight savings time I have had a hard time getting out and running. It has been dark by 5:30 at night and I don’t get off work until 5:00. I think am going to start running at the high school track near my house. I have not been very good at running the past few weeks. So I will start again on Monday. I was blog surfing the other day and came across a blog that had a link to a really cool website that creates running/exercise music that is all upbeat. Basically you can download individual songs or play lists that have been created. I haven’t had a chance to really look into it a lot but the samples I listened to were good. I’m not sure on the cost, but it seems like everything is free unless there is  a fee to sign up. I plan on looking into more when I have time. Here is the linkhttp://www.rockmyrun.com/. Check it out.

Last week I made an awesome easy and healthy dinner that I want to share with everyone. I found it on the Biggest Loser website. It’s called Taste of the Islands Turkey Salad. It was a fresh, tasty, and filling salad. I added almond slivers and grilled pineapple and it was delish. I think that adding the grilled pineapple made a huge difference taste wise and went really well with the pomegranate vinaigrette. I will be making this again, but i will probably wait until summer when I can get everything fresh. Check out the Biggest Loser website for this and other healthy recipes.   http://www.nbc.com/the-biggest-loser/exclusives/nutrition/healthy-eating/taste-of-the-islands-turkey-salad/

Sorry my blogging has been off this week. I will be back on schedule next week with some great posts. Thanks everyone for reading and please remember to get this out to your friends. It would be sweet to hit 500 views by midnight. Thanks.
