Wow sorry guys. I was so excited to write about my 5K, but remember how I live in the early 90’s and don’t have the internet at my apartment? Well I have been using my girlfriends internet to get my blog done each week (thank you by the way=)). Last Saturday luck would have it that a combination of her internet connection and my crappy old laptop did not create a conducive blogging environment. So I told myself that I would do it Monday. Obviously that didn’t happen so here I am a week later trying to get this out. This is what I wrote on Saturday last week:
“Yesterday I officially checked the first run off of my 2012 running goal list. I did the Freeze Your Buns Run 5K. The name of the race was appropriate because the temperature positively freezing. My goal was to finish the race in less than 30 minutes. My finish time was 27:03. I am really happy with that time, but I think that I could have done better. I feel like I did everything I could to prepare physically for the race, but failed at ensuring I was properly fueled. I have been drinking lots of Coke and other drinks lately . Also I have not been super diligent with healthy eating. Well Friday the day before the race was no different. I had my daily Coke and went out to lunch with some co-workers, and ate a less than healthy meal which probably involved a sandwich that consisted of pulled pork and brisket… o ya and french fries. I didn’t really eat dinner on Friday, and for breakfast on Saturday I had a granola bar. So I didn’t have much energy when it came down to race time. I just didn’t have the energy that I needed to get the best time possible. But I did accomplish my goal and got the best time possible given the circumstances.”
That was all I got typed before I let the internet win over my desire to get my blog out. Something that I want to take from the race last week is the importance of proper fueling before a race. So I have made goals to not just before race day, but everyday to: stay hydrated, eat healthy foods, and get a reasonable amount of sleep. There are many other things that I could do, but that is where I want to start and will build from there.
This post feels rushed and I guess that it probably is, I just want to get it out so I can move on to other topics. Thanks to everyone who reads this blog. I intended it to be a way to hold myself accountable to my training. I enjoy getting comments and feedback. That being said… What do you guys do to prepare for a long run? Are there any foods or supplements that you use?
Hey guys, sorry its been so long since my last post. Posting three times a week was getting to be a little too much for me. So the new schedule is that I will be posting on Sunday nights. The posts will be a 20 week look into my marathon training. The posts will include running journal entries and hopefully a running related topic that I will have been able to put some thought and time into. Once again sorry about the wait but I think that this will make the blog a more enjoyable experience for everyone all around.
Monday: Easy Run- Today is December and so far it has snowed all five days in December. What the H! Today I ran at an indoor track. It was nice to be out of the snow and cold and super annoying to have to count my laps. It made it hard to think of anything else as I ran besides 27, 28,29,27….o crap did I do lap 27 already? But 40 laps later I finished my 4 miles and it felt just as good as four miles outside. So I guess that will be my running home for the next…… four months. I felt a little more tired than I would have liked during my run today. I think this was because I did not have much to eat today pre-run so I was a little low on fuel. Hopefully things warm up here so I can get a few day of outside running. I ran 4 miles today. What did you do?
Wednesday: Hill run nope Tempo Run- Today was supposed to be my first day of doing hill runs. I was excited because for some sick reason I like running uphill. Unfortunately things are still a little frozen here and I did not want to take a chance slipping on the ice. Things have been melting pretty good over the last few days so I am hoping that I will be able to run outside some next week. My run today was not the best. I ate Chinese food for lunch, which stayed with me all day making it really hard to run. I need to put a better effort into my eating habits. I do pretty well most of the time. But there are some areas that I really need to work on. My goal for my long run this week is to make a serious effort to properly fuel before the run so I don’t have any excuses to have a bad run. Today at work a friend showed me this video. Check it out.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PzoxTgfRO0 I wish I could give such a compelling speech. I ran 5 miles today. What did you do?
Friday: Long Run- Today was my long run. It went a lot better than my other runs this week. I was looking forward to doing my long run outside on Saturday but I am going to go to Salt Lake tomorrow to look at the Christmas lights at Temple Square so I had to do the long run today. It has been a great first week of training. I ran 6 miles today. What did you do?
It has been a great week of running. I learned that I have literally become a fair weather runner. If conditions are not just perfect it’s hard for me to get out and run. Kinda a humbling week for a guy who at one time considered himself a running fanatic. This week I learned that it is important to be adaptable. It has been freezing and icy over the last week. Normally I would have opted out of running until favorable conditions came around. Instead I went to the indoor track and did my running. I am done waiting for favorable conditions. If you always wait for perfect conditions then you will be waiting forever. Adapt and continue the journey.
Now I need some feed back from everyone. This is my first week combining what would normally be three posts in to one big post. Is it too long? Doing it like this works better for me but I don’t want people to get bored and not read everything. So please just leave me a comment and let me know what you think. I ran 15 miles this week. What did you do?
